But Estes, a committed pro-choice Democrat who makes no bones about opposing much of the Bush administration agenda, said what she knows about Miers' character overrides whatever worries the abortion-rights issue poses.

"It could be a concern, and I certainly recognize that," she said. "I'm just saying this person has integrity, she is fair, she is not going to be pushed around by other groups on the right or the left. She is an independent thinker."
