Liberal 9/11?

Read this today, and have been pondering it:

Eric Alterman :

Katrina should signal a return to the belief that government matters and do for liberals what 9/11 (illegitimately and manipulatively) did for right-wingers.

I guess it's possible if the Democratic leadership doesn't keep it's powder dry too long. Waddya think?
